IFES advances democracy for a better future. We collaborate with civil society, public institutions and the private sector to build resilient democracies that deliver for everyone. As the global leader in the promotion and protection of democracy, our technical assistance and applied research develops trusted electoral bodies capable of conducting credible elections; effective and accountable governing institutions; civic and political processes in which all people can safely and equally participate; and innovative ways in which technology and data can positively serve elections and democracy. Since 1987, IFES has worked in more than 145 countries, from developing to mature democracies.

In June 2020, IFES constituted an Anti-Racism Task Force to lead IFES efforts to address the effects of systemic racism within our sphere of influence by promoting employee equity, representation and inclusion within the organization, delivering programs that promote anti-racism in all IFES service lines, and promoting community-based actions on racial justice outside of IFES.

To carry forward the mandate “delivering programs that promote anti-racism in all IFES service lines” IFES is seeking an Anti-Racist Programming Consultant to lead a series of internal discussions among key IFES communities of practice (Knowledge Management Groups), five regional teams and representatives of field offices (Country Directors, their deputies and Anti-Racism Ambassadors) and develop recommendations that they could implement in the short, medium and long term.

Deliverables:

  • Conduct a desk analysis of select current IFES programs from an anti-racist and anti-oppressive perspective, assessing strengths and weaknesses of IFES programs.
  • Conduct interviews and focus groups with IFES program staff in field offices and headquarters including but not limited to topical knowledge management initiative (KMI) teams to gauge perspectives and harvest ideas.
  • Provide best practices and recommendations for anti-racist and anti-oppressive programs on elections, democracy, governance, and human rights.
  • Present findings virtually on three separate occasions to: 1) The Senior Leadership team, 2) the Anti-Racism Task Force, and 3) the global IFES team.

  • Master’s degree in a relevant area of study or equivalent professional experience.

  • Minimum 15 years' experience in advance racial justice, diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion initiatives with evidence of demonstrated durable success.

  • Deep knowledge of Democracy, Governance and Human Rights work internationally. Technical assistance in the elections field a plus.

  • Strong awareness of systemic racism particularly anti-black and anti-minority racism.

  • Demonstrated experience with best evidence-based practices in anti-racist and anti-oppressive international democracy, governance, human rights or elections programs.

  • Lived expertise and a critical analysis with regards to the intersection of systemic oppressions and the elimination of identity-based barriers and inequities.

  • Lived experience to achieve credibility and ability to connect and promote collaboration engaging others in the organization, including groups who experience oppression and are racialized and work towards eliminating silos.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills especially effective in facilitation and managing difficult conversations.
